Alena Blanes, a grade 11 student at Archbishop Carney
Regional Secondary School, is the winner of the Coquitlam Optimist Club’s essay
contest based on a theme of “Optimism Should be a Priority.”
Alena was awarded $100 for the honor. In addition, her essay will be sent to the Pacific
Northwest District level to be judged along with winners from other Optimist
Clubs in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. College
scholarships are available for top winners at the district level.
Ryan Yu, a grade 12 student at Pinetree Secondary School placed
second and received an award of $50. The
third place winner was Shawna Lee, a grade 12 student at Archbishop
Carney. She received $25.
“The students did a wonderful job of articulating this
year’s theme. Only a few points separated the top three winners,” said David
Henry, Essay Contest Chair.
